Iggy McGovern on William Rowan Hamilton’s Mystic Dream of 4

Tuesday 21 March, 17.30-19.30

William Rowan Hamilton was the premier mathematician of the first half of the 19th century; he was also a poet, and a friend of Wordsworth and Coleridge. Poet and physicist Iggy McGovern has created a poetic biography of Hamilton comprising 64 sonnets, largely in the voices of Hamilton’s contemporaries. In this presentation the highs and lows of a remarkable life are explored, leavened by guest readings of 12 of the sonnets.

Professor Iggy McGovern is Fellow Emeritus in Physics at Trinity College Dublin. He has published three collections of poetry: The King of Suburbia (2005), Safe House (2010), and A Mystic Dream of 4 (2013); awards include the Hennessy Award for Poetry and the Glen Dimplex New Writers Award for Poetry. He held an Alexander von Humboldt Research Bursary in Physics and Poetry at Erlangen University in 2015.
