Sat 25 March 2017, 11:30 – 22:00 CET
Full conference programme now available (click the image above)
The annual IH Toruń International Teacher Training Day is upon us! This year we are very pleased to welcome Adrian Underhill as our main plenary speaker. Adrian is a trainer, consultant, author and speaker. He is also the past President of IATEFL, current IATEFL ambassador, and series editor of Macmillan Books for Teachers. He is the author of Sound Foundations: Learning and Teaching Pronunciation, and the app Sounds: The Pronunciation App.
Adrian will be running 2 workshops as well as giving the main plenary.
Jazz and the Dark Matter of Teaching
Spontaneity and playfulness are essential to learning and creativity. Although spontaneity is already everywhere in our lessons, it remains, like Dark Matter, largely unseen. Our methodology does not value it sufficiently for it to be discussed, critiqued, practised or improved. This interactive talk offers a thinking frame for developing spontaneity and improvisation for oneself, with learners, with colleagues, in teacher training, and even in management and leadership. I will offer practical activities and discussion.
Pronunciation: The Cinderella of ELT
Unlike grammar and vocabulary, pronunciation is not fully integrated into language learning. In this highly participatory presentation. I will propose two solutions which I will demonstrate in a hands-on lesson, showing how to liberate learners from the ‘grip’ of their mother tongue pronunciation, how to reconnect with the muscles that make the pronunciation difference. and how to feel greater confidence as the teacher. I will illustrate how to use the phonemic chart as a mental map to guide this process.
We are also pleased to welcome back Kylie Malinowska (IHWO YL Co-ordinator) who was here at our 2015 training day. Kylie will be running two fun, interactive workshops focussing on teaching Young Learners.
There will also be a range of other exciting workshops led by EFL experts and other teachers from International House schools as well as local schools. Presenters include Dave Cleary (IH Brno), James Egerton (IH Riga-Satva), Zsofia Jakab (IH Budapest), Katarzyna Mochniak (IH Wrocław), Edyta Pikulska (Oxford Station Akademia Toruń), Glenn Standish (IH Toruń) and Krzysztof Strzemeski (Nicolaus Copernicus University).

Do you need to be a teacher at an IH school in Poland?
No, the event is open to ALL English language teachers from any school - with preference to schools in Central/Eastern Europe. In the past, we have also had many local non-IH teachers of English and local state school teachers. There is a small fee of 50PLN (54,25PLN if booked online) for non-IH teachers.
What are my transport options getting to the event?
Toruń is situated in north-central Poland. Bydgoszcz airport (BZG) is 45 mins away by car or bus. Gdańsk airport (GDN) and Poznan airport (POZ) are both 2 hrs away with good train and bus connections. Warsaw has two airports. The main one is Warsaw Okęcie (WAW) and there is also Warsaw Modlin (WMI) which serves low-cost airlines. Warsaw is about 3hrs from Toruń by bus or train.
Polskibus.com offers good, cheap coach connections from many cities to Toruń. Advance booking is essential via their website.
PKP trains are now very modern and comfortable and you can book online in English!
What are the accommodation options in Toruń?
Although, it's a whole-day event it's best to stay overnight as there will also be a social event in the evening at a local bar. We have teamed up with 2 local 4 star hotels to offer a special discounted rate for all participants. If you are interested please contact us and we will give you the details. Alternatively, you can visit here for a selection of accommodation options in the city.
What are the nearest car parks to the venues?
The event is divided into 2 venues. The main venue (where the workshops take place) is International House (ul. Legionów 15). There are no parking spaces directly at the school. However, you can park around the corner in ul. Bawarczyków or at the car park behind Cinema City (Czerwona Droga). In the afternoon, we will all move to the 2nd venue which is Hotel Filmar (Grudziądzka 45). This is only about a 5-6 minute walk away from International House. If participants do prefer to drive to the 2nd venue, there is a paid car park at the hotel.
What can/can't I bring to the event?
Please bring your event ticket (if applicable*). This will be checked upon arrival. You can also bring a pen, notebook and ideas!
How do I sign up for the different workshops?
You sign up for the workshops on the day. Once you have registered, go up to the 1st floor. There you will find the sign up sheets in the corridor. Due to limited space, the workshops are on a first come, first served basis.
Will I receive a certificate of attendance?
Yes, all participants will receive a certificate of attendance. This will be given at the end of the plenary session.
Will there be catering at the event?
Participants will be welcomed with pizza upon arrival. There will also be tea, coffee and soft drinks available. After the plenary (approx. 18.00), participants can disperse independently to local restaurants before the big social party in the evening.
Where can I contact the organiser with any questions?
