The MOD Historic Estate
As one of the UK’s largest landowners, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) is responsible for a vast and diverse portfolio of heritage assets both in the UK and overseas. The MOD owns or has legal rights over around 1.4 per cent of the UK’s land mass. Training areas and ranges account for roughly 75 per cent of this, about 259,300 hectares, and there are military sites of every type, from historic naval dockyards to city-centre barracks. Within this extensive estate lie some 770 scheduled monuments and around 830 listed buildings.
Jack Haw (Historic Building Advisor) will give an overview of how this heritage is managed in practice. His presentation will explore the unique historic estate, describe the wide and unusual range of heritage assets, and outline the role of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) heritage team including built-heritage specialists and archaeologists who advise and work with stakeholders to ensure these assets are properly conserved and managed.
