About this Event

Existence and Insecurity: Myths – Challenges – Realities

Second European Conference for Existential Therapy

8th and 9th May 2020, Athens – Greece

In a rapidly changing world, humans and other beings are confronted with seen and unseen, obvious and hidden challenges. While the consequences of climate change become visible and urgent measures are required to protect life on this planet, the social aspect of our existence has moved to the virtual realm. Exciting possibilities such as new ways of relating have come with their own demons. Not only feel people increasingly isolated and estranged instead of connected, the fact that the sources of information are not always trustworthy threatens our grip on our existence.

With the threat of an ecological disaster on the one hand and the shadow side of exponential growth of virtual possibilities on the other, existential insecurity seems to take epidemic shapes. It gives rise to political instability and mass migration on a societal level, and experiences of self-doubt, angst, and hopelessness in ourselves and in our clients.

However, existential challenges are not new as such. Myths and tales from different times and countries show how people are able to face reality, meet their challenges, and regain courage to do the undoable.

In this second European Conference for Existential Therapy we want to face the challenges of our times and find inspiration in old wisdom and contemporary sources. By connecting to what frightens us, we can find the courage to engage with ourselves, the other, and the world in a different way.

The Federation for Existential Therapy in Europe was founded in 2015 at the First World Congress for Existential Therapy in London. It is approved as a charity in the United Kingdom and is a member of the European Association for Psychotherapy.
