Event description

Description

Following on from the success of last year, the Division of Informatics, Imaging and Data Sciences will be holding its 2nd Postgraduate Student Showcase in January 2018. The event will be held over two separate days on Monday 22nd January and Thursday 25th January. The showcase will be an opportunity to hear about your fellow researchers’ work, with feedback provided by academics and other students in an informal and friendly environment.

Both sessions are planned to run from 9 am to 2 pm. New to this year's showcase will be an additional workshop (non-compulsory) after the Thursday 25th session for all students. This workshop will focus on the commercialisation of research, including the use of public engagement and will include a panel of guest speakers. We encourage you to attend this event and engage with our external speakers, who will undoubtedly give great advice.

All students are expected to submit an abstract for a talk. 1st-year students will be limited to 10 minutes whilst 2nd and 3rd years will have 15 minutes (including 5 min for discussion/ questions). Students who are writing up their PhD are not mandated to talk, however, can do so if they please. Topics from across the Division are encouraged, but please keep in mind a diverse audience, and so presentations should be written to be understandable without a need for a great deal of knowledge of your field . Feel free to use previously submitted abstracts.

Please use the following form to prepare your abstract https://form.jotformeu.com/73133792151352. There are two different abstract formats to follow, IMRaD, which is the style guide preferred by many journals and an open, free text for those presentations where IMRaD would be inappropriate.

The deadline for the abstract submission is Sunday 7th January 2018.

As in previous years, all talks will be judged by senior academic members of staff. Not only will this provide constructive feedback but the best student presentation will be awarded a prize.

If you have any questions about abstracts or the event in general, please email Matthew Gentry (matthew.gentry@postgrad.manchester.ac.uk), Alex Pate (alexander.pate@postgrad.manchester.ac.uk), Michael Barrowman (michael.barrowman@manchester.ac.uk).
