Your 2016 Institute conference
“A brave new world”
The Institute’s annual one-day conference and networking event will take place at The Law Society in London on Friday 25 November 2016.
Legal finance has become a fundamental area of legal management. Holding and transacting client money is a vital function of delivering legal services: it is at the forefront of firms’ concerns when they try to implement proportionate compliance.
This year’s theme will be “a brave new world.” The conference will give members the chance to listen to expert speakers on the practical and real-life dilemmas faced by today’s accounts and management teams. It will also explain how the SRA’s proposed changes to the Accounts Rules are changing the approach. Our conference will be informative and engaging for all members, especially for those with the pivotal gatekeeping role of legal cashier or for those COFAs and practice managers, who are the lynchpin of financial governance.
You will hear all the latest news. This will include the SRA's view of the consultations on and changes in the Accounts Rules. We shall also examine the impact this will have on the industry and on the COFA’s role. The COFA’s role has demonstrated how critical legal finance compliance is to any legal provider.
There will be expert views on the Reporting Accountant’s Report: these will include the main pitfalls and risks of protecting client monies and exciting news about the emerging CILEx Regulation. You will also get to meet and hear from our CEO Tim Kidd. Tim will explain how the Institute is advancing by increasing the support and value we offer to all our members. He will also demonstrate how we are working to raise the profile of our members within the industry and to highlight the great job our members do in what are often difficult circumstances.
Today more than ever, firms are hungry for common-sense support and guidance on how to deal with the changing landscape of legal finance. Our prestigious line-up of speakers includes:
- Andrew Allan, Chair ICAEW Solicitors Special Interest Group "Challenges and opportunities in regulatory changes"
- Darren Whelan, ILFM Executive Council and VAT Trainer
- Access to Justice
- SRA Director of Regulatory Policy, Chris Handford
- Amy Bell, Money Laundering Task Force
Andrew Allen, Chairman of the Solicitors’ Special Interest Group of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, will explain:
- How the 2015 rule changes to the work of the Reporting Accountants will affect law firms.
- How the SRA 2016 consultation on the changes to the SRA Accounts Rules will affect law firms.
- What opportunities are available to law firms following the separate business rule changes in 2015.
Take the opportunity to hear the latest about SRA consultations, how the SRA envisages “a different approach” working and how things are changing across the legal sector.
Following fantastic feedback from last year, Darren Whelan, our legal VAT trainer, will investigate and demonstrate some of the everyday conundrums our members face with VAT and will give us some valuable training snippets.
We also have Microsoft lined up to support us again, by explaining the importance of ever-topical cyber security. And we shall be welcoming the Access to Justice Foundation, who will update us on their great work and how we at the Institute continue to support them.
Look out for more information on the speakers: we shall send that and the full agenda to you by email and shall post them on our website.
There will be an opportunity to ask questions of our expert panel, which will consist of the speakers and Institute members. You can submit them before the conference or ask them on the day.
We understand the challenges you and your firm face. Our aim is for the conference to bring together a variety of professionals who recognise the importance and share the views of legal finance. The day will give you the opportunity to connect, to be inspired and to find answers to the daily challenges you face. Whether you are supporting your firm and its COFA or leading the way as a practice manager, the Institute’s conference will give you what you need to perform your job efficiently.
Places are limited.
