A journey of a thousand miles starts from under the foot.
Laozi, Dao De Jing Ch.64
Our Ilkley Tai Chi classes provide somatic group body-work training in Lishi Tai Chi for adults over the age of 16 years. Tai Chi (Taiji in modern Chinese) is a term for ‘Supreme Ultimate’ which relates to Ancient Chinese or Daoist ways of developing our ecological relationship with other people, the earth and nature. Daoists see ourselves as a microcosm of the macrocosm that is the whole universe.
Mind-body exercises done alone, with a partner and in groups provide the context for embodying Tai Chi principles such as ‘rooting’, ‘centring’ and ‘yielding’ which are then transferred into the Lishi Tai Chi ‘forms’ such as the ‘Square Yard’ and ‘Flying Hands’.
Lishi Tai Chi is a Yin / Yang system which means that you will learn slow (Yin) meditative movements such as Kaimen – Chinese ‘Open Door’ Yoga that help to cultivate, store and harness qi energy as well as faster (Yang) movements such as Fengshou ‘Hand of the Wind’ that will teach you how to direct and utilise your energy. Lishi’s Yang arts can also be used as a form of self-defense where you learn external applications of the Tai Chi movements.
There are many benefits from practicing Tai Chi. We believe these benefits impact on the whole-person and include improved health and wellbeing as well as benefiting work and personal life and our extended relationships. Many people say that they feel more at peace with themselves from practicing Tai Chi, feeling contented rather than experiencing too many ‘ups and downs’. Mastering this will be one of the most challenging and enjoyable things you might ever do! The process of development from ‘becoming’ to ‘being’ is truly a life-long learning for any human.
