Event description
How is the disappearance of 'queer' and 'LGBT-Friendly' spaces affecting LGBTQIA+ people and our ability to house ourselves?

About this Event

LGBTQIA+ people are disproportionately affected by poor housing and homelessness in the UK. Research by the Albert Kennedy Foundation has found that up to a third of young people experiencing homelessness identify in some way as LGBTQIA+ and Stonewall Housing's work highlights how as a group already disproportionally impacted by austerity and the hostile environment, LGBTQIA+ people find it harder to access housing, are less able to afford average rents, and have a more difficult time navigating support systems.

On 16th October we'll be delving into the some of the reasons behind these trends and their impact on LGBTQIA+ people; as individuals and as a community. In particular, we'll be focussing on the topic of 'queer' and 'lgbt-friendly' spaces.

A recent wave of closures of gay bars and community spaces has bought this topic out into the open, in Oxford and beyond and to coincide with the Museum if Oxford's 'Queering Spires' exhibition on LGBTQIA+ spaces in Oxford, we want to explore the relationship between the disappearance of spaces for LGBTQIA+ people to meet, socialise and organise, and LGBTQIA+ housing insecurity and homelessness.

We'll also be hearing from people who are busy creating vibrant new queer spaces. We'll hear from activists and organisers who are providing tailored support for LGBTQIA+ folk experiencing homelessness, who are building housing specifically tailored for LGBTQIA+ older communities, and who are creating new 'queer' spaces for young people.

Speakers include;

  • Lo Marshall from UCL's Urban Lab about their recent research into the closure of LGBTQIA+ night spaces.
  • Dr Clara Barker, manager of the Centre for Applied Superconductivity in the Materials Department of Oxford University, vice-chair of the LGBT+ Advisory Group at Oxford University and organiser of Topaz, an Oxfordshire based LGBTQIA+ youth group.
  • The Outside Project, London's LGBTQIA+ homeless shelter and community hub.
  • Tonic Housing, a network of LGBTQIA+ affirmative retirement communities.
  • Tales of our City, an Oxford based local LGBTQIA+ history project and documenter of
  • Beyond the Binary, a community-led research project at the Pitt Rivers Museum to explore queering of Museum collections.

This event is open to everyone.

As with all events at Open House this event is free, however we do collect donations at the end of each event to cover speaker expenses and other running costs for Open House.

If you would like your bus fare to and from Open House refunding then please just ask one of our volunteers.

Accessibility and making your trip as comfortable as possible.

Open House is a single room shop with large windows that face out onto Little Clarendon Street, a small shopping street. There is a small kitchen at the back with a single, unisex toilet. We sometimes play music quietly but are happy to turn it off or down on request.

Our front door is 87.5cm at the narrowest point and whilst the shop is accessible to wheelchairs, at present we unfortunately are not able to provide a fully wheelchair accessible toilet. There is a 1.5m walk to the toilet from the nearest wheelchair accessible area.

Directly outside the shop there are free 30 minute parking bays and the restriction ends at 18.00.

We are working to ensure that our events are as accessible as possible to all our visitors. Open House is a dry space and there will be no alcohol at events. We are happy to provide interpreters or BSL Interpreters but as a tiny, volunteer-led project we need advance notice. If you have any additional needs that you would like to discuss with us before visiting the shop, please email us hello@openhouseoxford.org
