How engineers are made and will deal with:
- 1. Enabling very young children to recognise they like the physical world more than the virtual.
- 2. Structuring education so that they naturally follow science and mathematics.
- 3. Re-designing engineering courses so that they are suited to the modern world.
- 4. Restructuring professional registration so that it less daunting.
About Gordon Hodge
Born in 1920 Gordon Hodge CEng, CMarEng, HonFIMarEST came from very humble beginnings, leaving school at 14 to become an apprentice fitter and turner in the shipyard at Dartford. When war broke out he finished his apprenticeship eight months early and volunteered to join the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. He served throughout the war in Atlantic and Pacific waters, and stayed on for six further years, leaving in 1951 having attained the rank of 2nd Engineer.
Marriage saw him opt for a land-based career and he became a teacher at Poplar Technical College, which was where he had previously studied for his certificates of competency. Having proved himself a natural teacher he and his wife migrated to Singapore where he taught marine engineering at the Singapore Technical College for six years (1949 – 1955). He then returned to Poplar Technical College where he rose to become head of the department for marine engineering.
In 1980 he was asked to work for the IMO (then the IMCO) as a training consultant for marine engineering colleges. With many ships flagged to developing nations it was essential to ensure that colleges around the world could be helped to develop and maintain satisfactory courses. Gordon Hodge worked full time for the IMO until 1992. Even then, he continued to work for the IMO and for the Norwegian Government; until 2000.
His involvement with the IMarEST (originally IMarE) covers over fifty years from 1950 – when he first joined, until his death in 2006. He was engaged at the top level of administration; chaired many of the key committees of Council; and held the unique honour of being both an Honorary Fellow and Honorary Vice President of the Institute. He was a member of what is now the Board of Trustees and he was also actively engaged with the CEI, EC and EC UK.
About our Speaker
Chris Hodge and served for 26 years in the Royal Navy gaining a BSc degree in mechanical engineering, an MSc in electrical engineering and a post graduate diploma in nuclear engineering. Among other sea appointments he served as the Marine Engineer Officer in HMS ORPHEUS and HMS CONQUEROR. Subsequently he served in the UK MoD as the Head of both the Mechanical and Electrical Nuclear Steam Raising Plant Design Authorities and completed his naval service as the Head of the Electrical Power Systems Specialist Group. After leaving the Royal Navy in 1998 he joined Rolls Royce Marine in various positions before joining BMT DSL as the Chief Electrical Engineer in 2005. He has experience across the gamut of marine engineering including operation, maintenance, in-service support and design of systems and equipment for both surface ships and submarines. In particular, he has a significant international reputation for his breadth of knowledge and understanding of marine electrical power systems. He is particularly recognised for his work associated with the topology and application of innovative power electronic converters, the issues relating to novel torque dense propulsion motors, electrical machine winding space harmonics and the stability determinants of marine electrical power systems. He has published widely; winning numerous awards and has been invited to deliver keynote addresses in several international engineering conferences, including ones in Japan, China and the USA as well as Europe.
A Chartered Engineer, he is a Fellow of the IMarEST, a Fellow and former elected Trustee of the Royal Academy of Engineering and an Honorary Professor of Engineering at the University of Warwick. He served as the Chairman of the IMarEST Board of Trustees from 2009 to 2016 and is now serving as its President-Elect. He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in Her Majesty the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2015 for services to Royal Navy Engineering.
He lives in Frome Somerset, is married to Christine and has two adult children, Richard a biochemist and Becky a mechanical engineer. He is a Vice-President and Secretary of Frome Rugby Football Cub, a member of Frome Town Archers, a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights and a member and Treasurer of the Thunderer’s London Dining Club.
