Description
Come be a part of The Railway Challenge 2018, organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (Railway Division). This event showcases the culmination of locomotive building skills, expertise, knowledge, and business acumen of 11 participating teams of undergraduates, graduates in work and apprentices from across the UK and overseas.
The challenge, now in its sixth successive year, has and will continue to bring together teams, officials, volunteers, industry partners and the general public to a weekend filled with miniature (10¼” gauge) railway locomotives. They have been built to a set of strict rules and a detailed technical specification over the past 9-10 months and will now be tested live. Several categories of winners and an overall Railway Challenge champion will be crowned at the event.

Getting to the event:
The postcode for satnavs is LE14 2SF
This should bring you down Stapleford Lane towards Stapleford Hall off the B676 Melton to Saxby road. Go over the railway bridge and carry on into a single carriageway. Go over the humpback bridge and past the old farmhouses on your left. The main entrance to the field is the double gates on the left.
NB: if you find yourself at the entrance to Stapleford Hall (the hotel), please retrace your steps. The railway cannot be accessed from Stapleford Hall.
Best vantage point
The best vantage point for the track-based challenges will be on Sunday 1st of July at The Haven. Trains will be running between the Station and the Haven. The hourly timetable will be available at the registration desk. Spectators will also be able to walk down to The Haven, which takes approximately10 minutes from the Station building. This walk is across fields and it is recommended that you dress accordingly, including suitable footwear.

FAQs
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
No minimum age. No ID required.
What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?
Parking is available on site. Once through the gates, continue up the track and park on the grass on the left as per demarcation on the map.
What can I bring to the event?
Spectators will be able to purchase hot beverages and snacks from the catering van on site between 08.00 and 16.00 on both days. No complimentary catering will be provided by the IMechE and the caterers accept cash payments only. The catering van will be situated by the Station building on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (the Haven on Sunday).
