Storytelling is at the heart of cinema and innovations have given us the tools to tell these stories, moving us on from the silent era to the CGI blockbusters we enjoy today. From the introduction of innovations such as sound, colour and special effects, cinema has always been finding new ways of communicating and connecting with audiences and that continues into the current conversation with advances in immersive technology.

What does that mean for the future of storytelling? In this session we talk to three practitioners using immersive tech to expand on different genres of film.

Lauded by Vice as one of the “female filmmakers revolutionizing how we see the world”, Charlotte Mikkelborg is a British director - who first gained recognition as a BBC foreign correspondent - and has more recently become known for her work directing gripping character-driven non fiction film and virtual reality. Charlotte’s work packs an emotional punch with the aim of driving social change. Her latest project, The Journey, premiered at SXSW 2018 - this multisensory project traces the journey through childhood in 3 of the toughest places on earth.

Currently producing the first BFI Network VR commision, Alex has an impressive resume including being listed in The Drum’s 50 under 30 women in digital and has received Women of the Future Awards and Pioneers of Immersive Realities Award with her work having been selected for Raindance Film Festival, Cannes XR Film Festival and Aesthetica Short Film Festival among many others.

Rosie Collins - Creative Director at FRED
