Event description

Description

Whilst SME regional contractors often lead the field in providing benefits and legacies for their communities through their projects, their ability to report and promote their efforts can be hampered through a lack of resource and expertise; potentially affecting their ability to win work with public sector procurers who require evidence of impact and outcomes from CSR activities.

NFB Business & Skills, supported by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) is hosting a series of IMPACT: CSR in construction events with the aim of helping SME contractors to develop, deliver and report on their CSR activities in a way that helps them achieve the benefits an effective CSR strategy can bring.

The Birmingham IMPACT event will include:

Four keynote speakers

1. Tessa Jowell
Tessa Jowell played an instrumental role in bringing the Olympic Games to Britain. As Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, she was the first in government to back the bid and as Olympics Minister worked tirelessly to keep preparations on track for an outstanding display in 2012. Her political career also includes ministerial positions for Women, Public Health, Work and Pensions, and Regional Affairs. Her passion for education, public health, employment and equality is driven by her belief that everyone should have the same opportunity to succeed. Tessa is currently Professor of Practice at the London School of Economics and in 2014 she was honoured with the Freedom of the City of London.

2. Michael Reade, Director, Balfour Beatty
Michael is LEP (local enterprise partnership) Champion for Infrastructure and Construction. Representing Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership, Michael will discuss how good corporations are using CSR approaches to set the scene for a growing regional economic environment within which local businesses can thrive.

3. Steve Dallaway, Birmingham City Council
As Development Manager of the Housing Development team at the council, Steve will explain how Birmingham is taking steps to help SMEs access their council house building programme.

4.Simon Dingle, Carillion plc
As Operations Director of UK Construction at Carillion, Simon will discuss how the organisation is taking a CSR approach to delivering good business practices as a way of tackling the skills gaps and shortages well documented within the sector.

Workshop 3: a) Equality and diversity OR b) Safety, health and wellbeing

Workshop 4: a) Training, education and apprenticeships OR b) Organisational resilience

Interactive panel discussion

Keynote speakers from the day take questions from the audience around CSR and how to overcome the barriers and challenges that implementation may bring.

One to one clinics

We have representatives from key industry stakeholders on hand to offer advice, guidance, and support at no additional cost to you. Clinic hosts include:

1. CITB for grant/funding and training plan enquiries

2. Positive Outcomes for information about work-based training opportunities funded by the UK Government

3. Cross Construction Apprenticeship Task Force (CCATF) for all your apprenticeship enquiries

4. British Standards Institute (BSI) for advice and guidance on how to make your business resilient to future challenges

Chance to have your say

During the course of each roadshow you will be asked your views around CSR and the impact you feel activities bring, or could bring, to your business, employees, and the community as a whole. These views will be recorded and fed back to industry, thus helping to drive future development.
