About

Three organisations, Electric Palace, Northumberland Archives, and Mapperton House, will share learning from their volunteer programmes. They will discuss the benefits volunteers bring to the organisation, types of tasks undertaken and how to look after the wellbeing of volunteers.

Julie Montagu will share learning from the Alberta Research Project at Mapperton House. The project was winner of the ARA Archive Volunteering Award 2024. This is a virtual volunteer project to transcribe 10,000 letters which engage thirty women from Canada, America and the UK. Julie will share how this project was set up and administered as well as tips on how to keep volunteers engaged.

Gavin Maitland is the archivist at the Electric Palace, Harwich, Essex - the least altered, purpose-built cinema in the country. Volunteers have been recruited to support work on the collections and Gavin will outline what has worked well and what he would do differently.

Linda Bankier, the archivist at Berwick Record Office, part of Northumberland Archives has over 30 years’ experience of managing volunteers. Linda will focus on how to retain volunteers and skills development. A practical guide on designing volunteer agreements will also be covered.

There will be an opportunity to ask the speakers questions on their volunteer programmes as part of the session.
