Review:

IMPERIAL BLUE is a repudiation of the claim that you can’t make a low-budget fantasy film. Writer and director Dan Moss (an award-winning director and established electronic musician under the name Dan Hekate) is distinctly aware of this fact. IMPERIAL BLUE was intentionally written not to fall into any of the traps of low-budget fantasy cinema - instead of losing himself in convoluted technical scenarios, Moss focuses on character and narrative.

But that isn’t to say IMPERIAL BLUE skimps on its high concept roots. The mind-bending nature of Bulu – the premonitory drug at the centre of the film – is conveyed arrestingly through the lens of Ezequiel Romero, whose camera is also adept at finding the natural beauty across all the film’s locations. And what locations they are – shot across the UK, India, and Uganda, there are films that deliver such a vivid and multifarious palette as this one. And the film is more than sheer spectacle – Dan Moss does not glorify the drug trade, nor those who profit from it. Instead, IMPERIAL BLUE stands as a modern tragedy: a tale of greed, of betrayal, and self-fulfilling prophecies – literally, in this case. / Review by Milo Garner
