EPR is one of the necessary tools for financing the collection and recycling of electronics and a range of other waste products. However, its potential benefits depend on their proper implementation, otherwise they may not always be effective in delivering the best environmental sound management.

The aim of the session will be to share knowledge around practical aspects of EPR schemes and to discuss complementary measures/solutions that can be considered when working towards functioning EPR schemes. This can include a shift to new business models, the use of supporting policies or the extension of producer responsibility beyond national borders. The session will also debate about an inclusive model of EPR where the informal sector is properly recognised and engaged. This session will dive deep into the economic tools such as EPR but also other complimentary policy measures to increase resource efficiency of electronics along its entire value chain.

About our speakers

Reinhardt Smit

Reinhardt is co-founder of Closing the Loop, a Netherlands-based social enterprise with an innovative financing mechanism that enables the collection and responsible recycling of electronic waste from emerging markets. As a South African that grew up in Ghana, he is responsible for ensuring that Closing the Loop’s work remains relevant and beneficial to countries like Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon. With his company, he has been able to collect more than 4 million devices, all collected from the informal sector.

Susanne Yvonne Karcher

After completing Chemical Engineering studies in Germany, Susanne Karcher started her company EnviroSense CC (an Environmental Consultancy) in Cape Town in 1999 (www.envirosensecc.co.za) . Her company specialises in the planning, development and facilitation of tailor-made governmental, industrial/commercial and residential “Integrated Resource and Waste Management” programmes ultimately geared towards pollution prevention.

Susanne is a qualified RECP (resource efficiency and cleaner production) trainer with the NCPC (www.ncpc.co.za) as well as a founding member of the African Circular Economy Network (www.acen.africa ). In addition, Susanne provides voluntary mentoring services as a member of the globally operating Circular Economy Club (www.circulareconomyclub.com) .

As a one-woman consultancy business Susanne specialised early in her career on furthering collaborative, safe and inclusive WEEE management. As part of an international round table led by the WRF she contributed to the development of various signature research publications and projects including the ISO IWA 19:2017 Guidance Principles and also assisted with SRI led training initiatives in Ghana and South Africa. More recently, Susanne Yvonne Karcher, was also mandated by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) on behalf of ACEN to represent South Africa at the ISO Technical Committees on Environmental Management (TC207/SC5) and Circular Economy (TC323) in Kigali, Rwanda.

Since the end of 2020 Susanne has been appointed by WRF and Empa as the National Coordinator for the Phase 2 of the SRI South Africa project https://www.sustainable-recycling.org/ which is concerned (amongst other things)) with the development of a sustainable and inclusive National WEEE policy, operational and technical minimum standards for WEEE management, development of WEEE educational curriculum and local WEEE project implementation frameworks.

Mr. Mbera Olivier

Mr. MBERA Olivier is an Environmental Engineer by profession with 10 years of experience in recycling industry. He earned a MSc. Degree with honours from the China University of Geosciences in China. He is currently the Country General Manager for Enviroserve Rwanda Green Park, a leading e-waste recycling company in East Africa which operates the E-waste dismantling and recycling Facility in Rwanda.

He has worked for United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) as national expert where he participated in numerous project studies and implementation follow ups. He led the development of the E-waste management project in Rwanda and worked as the E-waste Project Manager under the Ministry of Trade and Industry. He has also worked as a national expert for different program including: Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production , Sustainable Consumption and production and Lake Victoria Environment Management Program II ( LVEMP II).

Simone Andersson

Simone Andersson is the Chief Commercial Officer at WEEE Centre, a Kenyan social enterprise, expanding safe e-waste management and circular solutions across East Africa, since 2012. With a BSc in Environment and Health, she has +19 years’ experience of communication and sustainability action around waste and water management. Previously, at RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden), she led innovative developmental projects on resource efficiency, circular economy systems, traceability, precious materials and various solid and liquid waste in society.

Her mission is to push development of society positively forward by creating awareness about the possibilities and prosperity that lays in Green Business and Clean Tech. She takes pride in being an enabler and communicator – creating awareness, finding constructive collaborations and inspiring to action for holistic structures.

About WEEE Centre & the Circular Innovation Hub

WEEE Centre is a social enterprise with a mission to provide a green and safe environment through a circular vision for e-waste management – design and policy dialogues, collection, reuse and material recovery of electrical and electronic waste. In 2012, it sprung out of the NGO Computers For Schools Kenya, after some years of creating a take-back scheme from beneficiary Learning Institutions.
