Event Details

This series of events will support you to develop effective responses to meeting the new duties contained within the Act.

The Homelessness Reduction Act recently became law and is due to be enacted in April 2018. The Act seeks to modify and extend existing homelessness law and places new duties on local authorities surrounding people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

These events will provide you with an up to date brief on what is contained within the Act, and how it can be implemented, including early learning from a DCLG trailblazer area that has already adopted a prevention focused approach to meet the new legislation.

This event will bring together professionals from the voluntary sector and statutory services to discuss:

  • how you can best address the advisory duty
  • what you need to put in place to effectively fulfil the duty to refer
  • explore how the spirit of the act can create opportunities for cultural and systems change locally
  • how to implement a healthy and effective review process
  • what a local personal support or housing plan might look like
  • how you can work together to make all of this a success.

This is your opportunity to convey the role that your service can play in meeting these new duties.

Changes as a result of the Act:

  • Improving the advice and information available about homelessness and the prevention of homelessness;
  • Extending the period ‘threatened with homelessness’ from 28 days to 56 days;
  • Introducing new duties to prevent and relieve homelessness for all eligible people, regardless of priority need, intentionality and local connection;
  • Introducing assessments and personalised housing plans, setting out the actions housing authorities and individuals will take to secure accommodation;
  • Encouraging public bodies to work together to prevent and relieve homelessness through a duty to refer.

This event is aimed at

  • Decision makers and frontline workers from the voluntary homelessness sector
  • Local authority homelessness and housing teams
  • Experts by experience
  • Professionals working within other statutory services such as criminal justice, the health service and Job Centre Plus
  • Registered Housing Providers
