About this event

Arts • Theatre

An Improv workshop mainly consists of playing with other adults by taking part in group games, making up stories, or playing silly characters.

Improv is a type of theatre and comedy but no one is expected to perform or be funny in this workshop.

Meet

Meet lots of other silly people and get to know them.

Play

The core of improv is about spontaneity, openness, imagination, and silliness, just like playtime was as a child.

Laugh

As the core of Improv is to make things up it is inherently funny. You don't even need to try to be funny. In fact it's best if you don't! You just will be funny.

The workshop

We'll explore all the basics of improv, how to play, how to fail, and how to be spontaneous through short games, longer scenework, partner work and more.

Your host

My name is Paul and I've been improvising since 2019. I've trained with Hoopla Impro and The Maydays in London, Awkward Actor's in Oxford and I've performed in a number of groups and even produced my own improv show called The Temporal Talk Show.

Frequently asked questions

What is Improv?

Improv is a type of theatre or sketch comedy and a group activity where there are no scripts and everything is made up on the spot.

Is there a Code of Conduct?

Yes. The basic gist is: Have fun and make sure your class mates are having fun. You can read the full code of conduct here. It is there to provide a safe space for everyone else and you: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IAqtr6qe4G6_8s

Are there discounts avaliable?

Yes. Your first session is free. There are also some discounts for emergency service and NHS workers l, and low income households. Use the contact organiser button to get a code.

Do I have to be funny?

No. In fact, trying to be funny is the last thing you want to do!

Do I need to bring anything?

Yourself, a bottle of water, an open mind and a positive mindset.

Will there be performance opportunities?

Once we have enough stage-ready people there's no reason we can't put on a show in any of the many local performance spaces.

Do I have to perform?

No, most workshop content involves group games and a little bit of performing to the group, but never alone. All activities are voluntary and you will never be forced to do something you are uncomfortable with. Who knows? Maybe you'll like performing?

Are there toilets?

Yes. Parc Dewy Sant has many toilets avaliable.
