This series of of five workshops is designed to support members leading services and directorates, and give them the skills knowledge and confidence to deliver sustainable quality improvement projects.
The programme will help you to develop improvement projects from start to finish; from identfying issues requiring change, planning and engaging others in the improvement process, delivering changes across complex environments, and effective evaluation to embed and sustain improvements across your organisation.
Who is this event aimed at?
This programme is ideal for members leading a particular service or directorate, who have a basic understanding of quality improvement concepts and wish to develop this further.
What will attendees learn at this event / workshop?
Attendees will receive an overview of change and systems models and learn how these can be practically applied in the delivery of health and care services. They will learn about diagnostic tools, such as fishbones and driver diagrams, which can be used to engage others in quality improvement projects. There is also an emphasis on co-production and evidence-based design (EBD) approaches, stakeholder analysis and the ‘lift speech’.
Attendees will also be taught how to process map, measure change and monitor variation, how to promote a culture in improvement, and explore an organisation’s ethos using a culture web. In the last session, attendees will learn about spread and sustainability and how this is promoted and encouraged in the NHS.
Day 1 - Theory of QI and diagnosing where to undertake it (Diagnose & Plan)

- Appreciation of systems level approaches
- Overview of SOPK and how this provides framework
- The Habits of an Improver (Health Foundation 2015) doc and personal areas for reflection

Day 2 - Engaging to inform plan (Engage)
Who with and how so?
- Using aim statements for clear objectives
- Diagnostic tools for clarifying focus (Fishbone)
- How to plan engagement and identify groups within your setting
- Stakeholder mapping and the impact on your organisation
- Plan and practice for engagement and managing change
- Define and refine aims
Day 3 - Evaluating quality improvement focus and impact (Deliver & evaluate)
How much by? How will I measure what’s happened?
- Where should I look for quality improvement areas? What does the data tell me?
- Using process mapping to identify focus areas
- Identifying a balanced set of measures to meet miprovement aims
- The Importance of variation
- Using a Collect - Analyse - Review cycle to inform if change has occured
- Identifying whether a process is capable of hitting a target
- Identifying where improvements may have the greatest impact
Day 4 - Delivering objectives and QI plans (Deliver)
So what and who next?
- Key tools and approaches for quality improvement in your workplace
- Refresh of MFI and how to use this
- Importance of improvement culture in healthcare and how to define it
- Complete a culture web for self / team / organisation
- How Plan / Do / Study / Act (PDSA) cycles can develop and refine knowledge
- Appreciate impacts for self and own organisation
- Identify and plan next steps for self and organisation
Day 5 - Spread and sustain (Sustain & spread)
What worked and where next?
- How to maintain improvements after implementation
- Techniques for sustaining momentum for effective change
- Describe and apply techniques on sustaining momentum for effective change
- How process, staff and organisation affect sustainability
- Identify when improvement initiatives are ready for ‘scale up and spread’
Conditions of this event:
1. This event is free to all Advancing Quality Alliance (AQuA) member organisations. In some cases, places can be paid for by non-members. If you’re interested in attending and are not a member then contact us. If you are unsure whether your organisation is an AQuA member, please click here.
2. Final event arrangements are confirmed with the venue up to two weeks before the event. In order to ensure that places are not wasted please let us know if you are no longer able to attend. Many of our events operate waiting lists so this will enable us to reallocate your place to someone else on the list.
3. We take photographs and occasionally video/live stream at our events. We use these pictures and video on our website and in other media such as Twitter and news publications. If you do not want to be photographed or filmed please let a member of the AQuA team know at the event.
