A Practical Introduction to the principles of Theraplay®

Ensuring the positive mental health and well-being of children is one of the most important aspects of growing up. It is not always easy to know how to do this, especially with younger children. Theraplay® is an evidenced-based approach to help build and enhance attachment, self-esteem, trust in others using joyful engagement. It is particularly helpful for children who have experienced trauma or find social engagement difficult.

Recent statutory guidance, 'The Designated teacher for looked after and previously looked-after children' (DfE, 2018), says, staff must understand 'the emotional, psychological and social effects of loss and separation (attachment awareness) from birth families and that some children may find it difficult to build relationships of trust with adults because of their experiences'. This seminar will help schools understand the issues and develop some key skills and practial ideas to support children with these life-impacting needs.

What is Theraplay®?

Theraplay is an evidenced-based therapy for building and enhancing attachment, self-esteem, trust in others and joyful engagement. It is based on the natural patterns of playful, healthy interaction between adult and child and is personal, physical, and fun.

Our seminar leader, Certified Theraplay® Therapist and Trainer, Fiona Peacock, says, 'This workshop will look at why Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can have a lifelong impact on the health and wellbeing of people. It will show how focussing on improving attachment seeking behaviours in the classroom might promote resilience in children to lessen the impact of ACEs and support them in accessing the learning opportunities of school.'
