Improving Language for Success in Maths

This course develops the practitioner’s understanding of how to support children’s language skills to support success in Maths. Maths involves understanding of complex technical vocabulary, specific concept vocabulary with shared meanings and language used to explain and describe formulations and methods. It is key that teachers and support staff are aware of the use of vocabulary used within Maths lessons.

The course aims to cover and explore key vocabulary used within Maths lessons, how to support understanding word problems and use key language strategies daily.

Aims:

• Identify the use of language in Maths lessons and the impact on children’s success.
• Identify children in your classroom who struggle with mathematical concepts and children with language difficulties or disorders that need support.
• To provide advice and strategies on supporting the development of mathematical language in children.

Ideal for:

Any practitioners working with children who struggle in Maths, children with language disorders, difficulties and general day to day teaching of Maths.

This course is particularly helpful for staff who are developing their skills in supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Please note: This course will be run as an online training session via Microsoft Teams. When you book, you will receive information about how to access the training and how the session will be run.

Please note that our training courses and workshops are designed to be interactive, to ensure participants get the most from the session. With this in mind, we ask that you check to ensure that both your camera and microphone are working prior to the course.

Each person attending the training needs to purchase an individual ticket. Several participants may join the training from the same device but each participant must have purchased an individual ticket. Additional participants who have not bought a ticket are not allowed to sit and watch the training, either in or out of the camera view, and will be asked to leave.

• Less than 2 weeks before the start date – full charge applies.

Transfer policy:

• You may transfer your place on a course to an alternative participant or to an alternative date at any time prior to the start date but please inform us of the change.
• Failure to attend a course will not entitle you to transfer to another course/date and neither will you be able to transfer your place to others.
