Event description
Good oral health benefits self-esteem, dignity, social integration and nutrition. Training with Mike Wheeler from Health Education England.

About this Event

Maintaining oral health brings benefits in terms of self-esteem, dignity, social integration and nutrition.

Poor oral health can lead to pain and tooth loss and can negatively affect self-esteem and the ability to eat, laugh and smile.

Studies show that many residents have oral health problems, owing to an inconsistent approach to care. Care staff can be reluctant to help clean patients mouths and some lack the appropriate training.

NICE: Oral health for adults in care homes (NG48) 2016

This training with be delivering by Mike Wheeler, Oral Health Project Lead for Health Education England.

These introductory study sessions, part of Truro and Penwith College's Connected College, will:

  • Share with you best practice to ensure that you can appropriately care for the oral health of those you support.
  • Raise awareness of NICE guideline ‘Oral health for adults in care homes’ (NG48)
  • Provide you with tools to be able to assess people’s oral health and their ongoing day-to-day oral hygiene needs
  • Support you to make sure oral hygiene is a fundamental part of person-centred planning

The three sessions below will be followed by more in-depth education that will include nutrition, hydration and speech and language therapy. You can help to shape this by providing feedback and sharing yours needs during these sessions. Dates to be released soon!!

Ideally, we would like you to book on the session that is linked to the area (Integrated Care Area) where you work. This will enable to get to know each other better, share good practice and learn from each other. However, if you cannot make the date for your locality you are welcome to join an alternative date (all sessions are from 1.30 - 2.30pm).
