Description

Improving outcomes for disadvantaged children in Education: Closing the gap

Educational outcomes for disadvantaged children are a growing cause of concern, with marked divides in attainment based on region, socio-economic status, and many other factors. In the 2011/12 academic year, 64% of children eligible for free school meals did not achieve five A*-C GCSEs, almost twice as many as their more affluent peers.

  • Issues – What are the root causes of underachievement among disadvantaged children, and why are some groups affected more than others?

  • Impacts – From regional divisions to underperforming ethnic groups, how do the issues affecting disadvantaged children impact on educational outcomes?

  • Initiatives – How can schools navigate between pupil premiums, academisation, teacher incentives and other initiatives to answer the most important question: what works?
