Brought to you by Norwich Research School, and developed by the Research Schools Network, a course designed to support secondary schools master the reading and writing challenges of the new curriculum in every subject.

Based on the EEF’s guidance and rooted in the latest research, this professional development programme will enable your teachers make confident decisions that will help your pupils access the complexities of the new curriculum in every subject.

Over three full-day workshops, participants will develop a deep understanding of what the research says makes for effective teaching of Disciplinary (subject-specific) Literacy, and apply this in their schools. Participants will be given a wealth of strategies for vocabulary instruction, reading and writing in every subject discipline.

Outcomes of the programme:

  • Evaluate current practice in light of the evidence
  • Explore evidence-based reading and writing strategies
  • Enhance assessment and intervention as part of a whole-school focus on literacy
  • Mobilise a whole-school approach to Disciplinary Literacy.

This programme is aimed at senior leaders of curriculum, Subject Leads and literacy co-ordinators.

Day One: Wed 22 January 2020 8.45am-3.15pm

  • Unpack and explore the evidence regarding literacy at the transition to secondary phase
  • Explore strategies for deliberate vocabulary instruction
  • Unpack and explore the nuances of subject-specific reading strategies
  • Audit your school and subject’s current practice.

Day Two: Wed 11 March 2020 8.45am-3.15pm

  • Explore the evidence regarding teaching writing at secondary phase
  • Evaluate how you currently model writing to pupils
  • Develop strategies to improve spelling
  • Tightly define literacy aims for subjects in your school as part of a whole-school approach.

Day Three: Wed 24 June 2020 8.45am-3.15pm

  • Unpack EEF guidance on assessment
  • Evaluate your school’s current approach to interventions in response to literacy barriers
  • Apply the EEF guidance on effective implementation and evaluation, in producing a delivery plan for whole-school literacy.

Schools will need to support their participants by providing them with the time to implement their learning back at school. This is a comprehensive development programme involving intersessional tasks for participants. Schools will need to prioritise implementation of learning from this programme at a senior level.
