Event description

Description

At the Teacher Development Trust, we have long been supporting schools to engage with collaborative research, supporting them to overcome the cultural barriers and challenges of implementing teacher enquiry models such as Lesson Study and using this as a form of effective professional development.

We are delighted to be hosting this conference in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University on Friday 9th February 2018 to explore Improving Teaching through Collaborative Research in greater depth. The day is open to all leaders and teachers that have an interest in this area, or have perhaps already established a Lesson Study programme or similar model in their context.

When carried out effectively, Lesson Study has the potential to transform teacher practice and improve pupil learning. However, when collaborative enquiry implemented incorrectly, there is a risk of adding to an already heavy teacher workload and failing to make any difference to pupils’ outcomes. Throughout the day we hope to address the following question:

How can schools ensure that Lesson Study is implemented effectively to improve both teacher practice and pupil outcomes, and build capacity within the system to support collaborative enquiry more widely?

What will I learn?

The day will include a range of practical sessions themed around Collaborative Research, covering topics including:

  • Placing teacher enquiry in the context of wider professional development
  • Providing the latest evidence on professional development
  • Giving an overview of the principles of TDT's Lesson Study model
  • Providing an overview of the critical features of effective Lesson Study; or “Collaborative Lesson Research”
  • Providing practical resources and tools to implement teacher enquiry models
  • Structuring and modelling example enquiry questions
  • Designing measures to help evaluate

Confimed speakers

We are delighted to confirm Dr Pete Dudley, President of the World Association of Lesson Studies (WALS) and Geoff Wake, Professor of Mathematics Education at University of Nottingham as keynote speakers for the day.

The conference will also include practical workshops from a range of leading TDT Network schools including Falinge Park High School, Culcheth High School and Central Primary School.
