Aims of the workshop

Feedback from Ofsted inspections tells us that there are a number of features that are common to really good teaching and learning and which are very often absent in weaker teaching. These include:

  • High standards of students’ work, resulting from high teacher expectations
  • Students’ development of high level critical thinking skills
  • Students’ ability to improve their work through good verbal and written feedback
  • Individual challenge and support
  • Students’ development of wider, work-related and personal and social skills including safeguarding
  • The good progress made by students and their progress to positive destinations

Delegates will have the opportunity to explore and learn from effective practice from across the sector and consider how best practice can be adapted and applied in your own organisations. During the session delegates will:

  • Reflect on and understand what inspection feedback is telling us
  • Review examples of good practice from across the sector
  • Critically evaluate examples of practice from your own organisations? How can it improve?
  • Consider ways to evaluate learning and teaching, share practice and foster high standards in your own organisations

The programme for the workshop includes:

  • A review of findings from recent inspections and an opportunity to explore the common themes and pitfalls
  • What does best practice look like – drawing on inspection findings research, shared experience and Kate’s wide experience as a consultant
  • Masterclass style evaluation of good practice from delegates’ own work place. For this exercise delegates will need to bring a short case study to share with peers.
  • Beyond observations – how can team leaders and managers foster high standards in teaching and learning?
  • Action planning

Who should attend

Staff who are responsible for managing learning including curriculum/course leaders, curriculum/learner managers and quality leads.

The facilitator

Kate Murrie is a coach, trainer and consultant with over 20 years’ experience in the learning and skills sector. Her career spans work with organisations across the FE sector. She has been an inspector since 1999 and has supported many organisations through self-assessment and inspection. She is also a college Governor and a parent. This combination enables her to understand, question and challenge each organisation from both outside and the inside. Kate is approachable and challenging, taking pride in encouraging learning organisations to expect the best from themselves and to achieve more than they had expected.
