About this event

What is it?

Join us for this 90-minute online event to discuss the impact of workforce mental health on productivity, and to tell you about the significant investment the Midlands region has received to deliver two new Midlands-focused groundbreaking research programmes.

The two programmes, led by the Enterprise Research Centre (ERC) and Coventry University respectively, will shed light on precisely how workplace mental health practices impact productivity, and provide direct support for employers and their employees to deliver free of charge evidence-based, tested and sustainable solutions to help their staff stay mentally well.

Chaired by Dr Paul Litchfield, Independent Chief Medical Advisor to ITV and Compass Group, agenda includes speakers from the Enterprise Research Centre and universities of Coventry, Derby and Nottingham, as well as Midlands employers discuss the challenges they face and how they are accessing support.

Who is this event for?

Aimed at organisations and individuals who work with Midlands employers. We need your support to help us to engage employers so they are aware of their role in supporting staff, and so that they know they can access free support through our programmes, to find out what will work and to help them to implement it.

Why are we running this event?

The total annual cost of poor mental health to UK employers has increased by 25% since 2019, totalling between £53-56 billion in 2020-21. The scale of poor workforce mental health is a huge challenge to employers, particularly SMEs - making sure they and their people managers are able to provide effective and appropriate support for employees experiencing new or worsening mental health problems.

Professor Stephen Roper, Director of the ERC is leading the one of the programmes. He said:“The links between mental health practices and productivity are not fully understood. Given the huge implications we know that the pandemic has had on mental health, it is crucial that firms know what works in this space, so that they are able to put the most effective practices in place and build more resilient, productive businesses for the future.”

The two new programmes are funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), and are managed by the Enterprise Research Centre (ERC) and Coventry University respectively, in partnership with a collaboration of partners including mental health charity Mind, the West Midlands Combined Authority and universities of Birmingham, Derby, Lincoln, Loughborough, Nottingham and Warwick.
