Description

What would you do if you could take over your town WiFi network? We’re going to try it out.

The RSA welcomes a partnership with MSL Discover to explore connectivity, localism and culture.

Come to beautiful St Mary in the Castle in historic Hastings on 23 September 2019, for open discussions about the next networks that might weave through our towns and cities.

"In ConveRSAtion: Could commandeering the town wifi connect the community?" is a free afternoon session hosted by the RSA. Fellows and local arts and creative industries practitioners are invited to discuss themes inspired by recent RSA national debates around coastal economies and digital skills. A drinks reception sponsored by the RSA follows at the end of the day and is open to all participants.

Please book your free place for this free afternoon session using the link at the top of this page.

For those interested, there are also ticketed morning sessions featuring speakers from national public sector agencies as well as regional bodies keen to bottom out the reality of how local communities can build ‘smart towns’ and ‘smart villages’ well before 5G arrives. Key themes for discussion:

  • Why do we need 5G when we already have free town WiFi?
  • Can we use existing broadband networks to build our local economy?
  • It’s a climate emergency. Can a network help us monitor energy use?
  • Can we signpost our history and heritage better for visitors?
  • We are a festival, arts and music town; will live streaming build new businesses?

Tickets for the morning session include lunch and refreshments, and fees will help the organisers cover event costs. Details and bookings for the Morning sessions here.
