Advances in quantum physics now suggest that such understandings of time -once dismissed as “primitive” or (ironically) “backwards”- are in fact far closer to how time operates, than the “western” investment in a chronological linear timeline that proposes past-present-future as inherently separate and discrete.

This conversation explores African and African- diasporic approaches to time and the sonics that best express them, with a particular emphasis on dub. Dub takes extant reggae songs and manipulates them using a mixing board, layering them in aural effects such as reverb and echo. These sonic tools create “new maps” that allow an individual to analyse their current social predicament. These “new maps,” therefore, engender a “remapping” of reality, a reconstitutive process that parallels dub’s emphasis on modification and alteration’.

The conversation will be followed by a DJ set from Dub Will Hear Our World.
