Event description

Description

Julie Deane launched her company primarily so she could relocate her children to a new school, yet she didn’t ever anticipate how sucessful The Cambridge Satchel Company, worth £10 million, would become.

Since founding the company in December 2008, Julie Deane's satchels have become recognised all around the world, selling to Harrods, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, Bloomingdales, Printemps, Saks Fifth Avenue and Lane Crawford to name but a few.

Having started only four years ago with a start up fund of £600 and help from her mum (Freda Thomas), Deane launched the business from her kitchen table. "Like any business, setting up takes hard work and determination. I made good use of the internet and used Google to find out all the information that was needed." - Julie Deane.

One of the biggest hurdles she experienced was keeping faith that her idea was a good one - dispite other people's discouragement. Staying determined and focused is absolutely key.

All products are manufactured in the UK and Deane is adamant it will stay this way. It may well be cheaper to manufacture in other countries, but the

Popularity of the bag has risen immencely, and with that The Cambridge Satchel Company have had hundreds of fake websites popping up, selling counterfeit products or simply taking people’s money and sending nothing. "This has been very frustrating for us" says Deane, but the company are now using Mark Monitor to counteract these fraudulent sites and reduce the problem.

Some of the most amazing experiences since starting the company include visiting 10 Downing Street with her mother after winning the Red Hot Women Awards, and opening her factory which currently produce more than 500 bags each day.

Come and listen to Julie Deane and her incredible story. Ask questions and learn exactly what it takes to start your own successful company!
