Description

Get to know the writing lives of two award winning and internationally renowned novelists; the Sudanese writer Leila Aboulela and MACFest Founder and Director Qaisra Shahraz. Both authors will be in conversation moderated by Dr.Claire Chambers.


Leila Aboulela was the first winner of the Caine Prize for African Writing. Her latest books include the short story collection Elsewhere, Home and the novel, The Kindness of Enemies, based on the life of Imam Shamil.  Leila’s fiction has received critical recognition and a high profile for its distinctive exploration of identity, migration and Islamic spirituality. Her novels, The Translator, a New York Times 100 Notable Books of the year, Minaret and Lyrics Alley, were all long-listed for the Women’s Prize for Fiction. Lyrics Alley was Fiction Winner of the Scottish Book Awards and was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Prize. She has written several radio plays for the BBC and her work has been translated into 15 languages. Leila grew up in Khartoum and now lives in Scotland.

Qaisra Shahraz is an award winning and critically acclaimed novelist, scriptwriter, gender and peace activist. She is recognised as being ‘The Most Influential woman in Manchester’, winner of National Diversity ‘Lifetime achiever Award’ & listed in Muslim Power 100. Qaisra is the founder and Director of MACFEST, Muslim Art & Culture Festival she is currently setting up in Manchester. Author of ‘The Holy Woman’ Typhoon and The Concubine & The Slave Catcher’ her work is translated into several languages & studied in schools and universities.
