Event description

Description

An opportunity to hear direct from the man who spent five decades working for Rupert Murdoch's companies across the world.

Les Hinton will be speaking about his life, career and his new memoir - The Bootle Boy: an untidy life in news.

Fifty-two years after being sent out to buy a sandwich for his first boss, one Rupert Murdoch, when Les Hinton finally left Murdoch’s employment in 2011, the business of news had been turned upside down.

Les was the head of Murdoch companies in newspapers, magazines, and television — including The Wall Street Journal, Fox Television Studios, and News International, publisher of The Times, The Sunday Times, The Sun, The Times Literary Supplement, Today and The News of the World. His career spanned three continents over five decades, from Fleet Street to Wall Street, Adelaide to Los Angeles.

Hinton depicts the upheavals that swept his trade with the same widescreen perspective and sharp colours he deploys to show us how politicians from Clinton to Blair, from Brown to Cameron, dealt with the media. We see the death of Diana, the IRA bombings, the charisma of Bill Clinton, and the phone-hacking scandal from a revelatory new angle. And we get the most direct portrait yet of the man who is perhaps the last of the great press barons: Rupert Murdoch.

Les will be interviewed by Chris Roycroft-Davis.

Chris Roycroft-Davis clocks up his 48th year in the national press this year. He spent almost 23 years at The Sun, starting as a sub-editor and eventually becoming Night Editor and then Executive Editor, working closely with Les Hinton and Rupert Murdoch
