Event description

Description

Hosted by Dr. Bob Ramdhanie, Mukhtar kicks off the ‘In Conversation’ series with stories that inspires and informs.

Mukhtar’s creative practice as an artist has always been underpinned by his political involvement in grassroots campaigns and political organisations. As a painter, photographer, filmmaker and theatre director, he has used his artistic and creative skills in the service of the struggles for social justice and equality. Political organisations that he has co-founded or has been actively involved in included Sheffield Asian Youth Movement, Pakistani Workers Association, Manchester Black Peoples Alliance, South Asian Alliance and the Black Multi-Media Arts Collective. In the 80’s he documented the struggles of Asian and African Caribbean communities and holds an extensive photographic and video archive.

His support for the national liberation struggles of the Irish and Kashmiri people led him to make a number of documentaries which included ‘The Longest War’, ‘No British Solution’ ‘The Struggle for Kashmir’ and ‘Heaven Aflame’. His presentation will include the screening of extracts from his films and photographs.

He was the Director of Arts and Marketing at the Drum Art Centre for 17 years before resigning to focus on his own creative practice. Currently he is the artistic director of Kalaboration Arts (Dub Qalandar and Sigh of the Musaafir) and the festival director of Simmer Down Festival.
