Description

Win Careers Week is delighted to invite you to the In Conversation session with Ruth Owen OBE, CEO Whizz-Kidz and Jacqui Adeniji-Williams TV presenter and comedian. The session aims to be an informal and interactive dialogue with Ruth and Jacqui to provide an insight into how confidence, resilience and leadership played a role in their career journeys as wheelchair users.

A wheelchair user from the age of seven, Ruth believes passionately in the importance of independent mobility in a child’s life. Ruth forged a successful career in the private sector, in technologies, eventually setting up and running her own IT company for ten years. For several years Ruth was a Trustee of children’s charity Barnardo’s.
Ruth joined Whizz-Kidz as Chief Executive in 2004. Ruth has led the charity to become the biggest provider of powered and light weight manual wheelchairs for disabled children outside of the NHS, and one of the leading campaigning organisations in the sector. Ruth was acknowledged in The Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 2012, and awarded the OBE in recognition of her services to disabled children and young people. Under Ruth’s guidance, Whizz-Kidz aims to ensure that every disabled child has an opportunity to be something special…a kid.

Jacqui Adeniji-Williams is a spoken word artist, mix engineer, facilitator, and artist manager. Her love for spoken word and poetry came to light in 2011, when she joined “Poets Platform” led by Kat Francois. Since then she has performed at various events such as the Paralympic Team Welcoming Ceremony and the Opening Ceremony. She has worked with Halfmoon Young Peoples Theatre, Theatre Royal Stratford East, National Youth Theatre and is also the youngest board member of Graeae Theatre Company. Jacqui is an Ambassador for Whizz-Kidz, and her long term commitment to championing the rights of young disabled people has led to her role as reporter for Channel 4 News’ No Go Britain series.
