Event description
In Depth - Assessing, Analysing and Planning for early years and childcare

About this Event

Aims and purpose:

Assessing and analysing the early years and childcare market to support market management planning and delivery, is a challenging task. The annual childcare sufficiency assessment (CSA) is the starting point, providing the evidence required to demonstrate the extent to which a local authority is meeting its statutory childcare sufficiency duty, and delivery of the early years entitlements. Findings from the CSA need to be analysed to identify what actions are required, and why, to plan actions to manage the market to deliver the sufficiency duty. Information is also required to support childcare providers to plan their delivery models to meet new and changing demand.

  • To outline how LAs could and should complete a childcare sufficiency assessment (CSA) to meet Childcare Act (2016) statutory duties.
  • To explore how a CSA needs to be used to inform early learning and childcare place planning, and support wider duties (for example, Section 7 of the Childcare Act 2006, to secure early years provision free of charge; Section 12, to provide information, advice and assistance).
  • To provide ‘how to’ examples and guides, including references to data sources and draft research instruments and tools.
  • To consider how an understanding of childcare sufficiency links to and support the LA’s duty to manage the local childcare market and ensure provider engagement
