This course covers the wide range of advanced segmentation methods that can be applied to X-ray CT data for post processing analysis.

PLEASE NOTE: This course is only free to University of Manchester Staff or Students.
Standard binerisation methods are explored for simple structure analysis while watershed methods are explained for multiphase materials. The final parts of the course will concentrate on the production of bespoke segmentation pipelines.
Course Timings
- Start time: The course will start promptly at 9:30am
- Breaks: There will be breaks throughout the day
- End time: The finish time can be variable between 3:00pm - 4:30pm as it depends on the number of questions
Course Content
1. Global thresholding methods
- Basic theory behind global thresholding and the current techniques used to identify phase boundaries
2. Advanced global thresholding methods
- Techniques such as hysteresis, auto-thresholding etc are explained and how these can be applied
3. Watershed segmentation
- What is watershed segmentation and the generation of seed points
- Application of a number seed point generation methods
- Watershed method for engineering parts
- Watershed method for multiphase materials
- Customised watershed recipes
4. Local segmentation methods
- Application of local segmentation tools
- Theory of opening and closing in segmentation
- White/black hat segmentation
5. Production of bespoke segmentation recipes
Training Course Prerequisite(s)
Candidate should have completed the ‘Introduction to X-ray CT Visualisation using Avizo’ course run by NXCT or should have expert/functional knowledge of CT theory and Avizo.
