by Terence Rattigan | Directed by Fleur Buckley | Kent Drama Association Full-Length Play Festival Entry
Adjudication by Paul Doust will take place on Thursday 04 May.
The play is inspired by the true life situation of Rattigan’s friend Rex Harrison and his wife, Kay Kendall, who suffered an early death from cancer. In the play, Lydia is shielding her husband, irascible Drama Critic, Sebastian, from the knowledge that she has leukaemia. Sebastian does in fact know however, and is seeking to spare her.
In order to do so, he has to continue to treat her and their son, Joey as boorishly as he has always done. In the process he lets his son down so badly that their relationship may be irretrievably lost. This is much to the horror of his friend Mark, who has loved his friend’s wife for years, and is appalled by Sebastian’s treatment of both Lydia and Joey.
Written, as always, in Rattigan’s elegant prose, with wit and poignancy, the play follows his eternal theme of what people don’t, or can’t say, being more revealing than what they actually do say.
