Event description

Description

Inaugural lecture by David Martill, Professor of Palaeobiology, University of Portsmouth

Pterosaurs, flying reptiles of the Mesozoic, were originally thought to have been small aquatic animals and only 30 years later was it realised they could fly. Some evolved into giants as large as a Spitfire aeroplane. These giants are known only from fragments and piecing them together is a challenge. The search for more remains of these enigmatic reptiles is even more challenging. In this talk, David will take you around the world in search of these fantastic fossils, from the Sahara Desert of North Africa to the jungles of Brazil and to the holiday beaches of the Isle of Wight.
