There’s a Dyke In the Pit: A Day of Queer Grrrl Power

A backlash against the male-dominated world of punk, a surge of impassioned DIY activism or the official third wave of feminism; no matter how you look at it, the Riot Grrrl movement of the 1990s made a cultural and political impact from which we can still feel the reverberations today.

This year Fringe! will pay tribute to the two subcultures that allowed the queer community to cement its relationship with punk in the 90s – queercore and Riot Grrrl – through a day of conversation, live music and rare footage from the era.

In Search of Margo-Go at Club Totally

Come and spend a night at Club Totally, the venue imagined by queer underground filmmaker Jill Reiter in her never-before-seen DIY film In Search of Margo-Go, starring Bikini Kill front woman Kathleen Hanna. As well as premiering this unfinished but quintessential piece of Riot Grrrl history, we’ll also be showing Reiter’s Frenzy – a punk rock romp through the 90s New York City music scene.

Reiter’s shorts will be contextualised by the UK premiere of Abby Moser’s mid-length documentary Grrrl Love and Revolution which features Riot Grrrl band Double Zero and sheds light on the relationship between the queercore and Riot Grrrl movements by interweaving archival footage with contextual and reflective interviews.

There will be live music from all-female, three-piece London outfit Skinny Girl Diet, a Q&A with Riot Grrrl filmmakers Jill Reiter and Lucy Thane, and DJs playing all your favourite feminist punk until the early hours. Be warned: Club Totally’s queuing audience members will be subjected to queue-jumping by VIPs for maximum irritation while enduring the surly gaze of door girl Bica. “Club Totally: we either totally love you or we totally hate you!”

Frenzy

Jill Reiter, Super 8 on digital video, 12min., 1993

Frenzy brings the grrrl riot to the New York City underground, as Jill Reiter revels in the wild antics of a “queer grrrl” band, whose even wilder audience is inspired to rip off their clothes and grab and kiss the grrrls in the band, tearing them away from their instruments while an orgy ensues backstage.... As Chris Straayer writes of Frenzy: “Raw energy is its style. It screams licentiousness.”

Grrrl Love and Revolution

Abby Moser, 2011

The UK premiere of Abby Moser’s mid-length documentary Grrrl Love and Revolution which features Riot Grrrl band Double Zero and sheds light on the relationship between the queercore and Riot Grrrl movements by interweaving archival footage with contextual and reflective interviews.

Abby Moser was at the heart of Riot Grrrl NYC, filming between 1993 and 1996, and documents here it’s participants’ frustration with a mainstream media and the difficulties respecting race and class divisions amongst themselves.

In Search of Margo-Go

Jill Reiter, Super8mm/16mm, 1995/2014

A long-lost gem, Jill Reiter’s wildly inventive and ambitious In Search of Margo-Go starred Bikini Kill front woman Kathleen Hanna in a Riot Grrrl-meets-queercore production filmed in 1994 between New York and San Francisco. Never finished, it has remained shrouded in mystery – until now, with Jill’s new director’s cut premiering at Fringe! presented with live band accompaniment.
