In the Freethinker’s Footsteps
Event Information
Description
Join historical novelist Heather Richardson for a talk and tour of Thomas Aikenhead’s Edinburgh. The event will start with a virtual tour of old Edinburgh on a newly-created interactive map of the city, followed by a walk around some of the key locations in Aikenhead’s short life.
Thomas Aikenhead was executed for blasphemy in 1697, and is the subject of Richardson’s latest novel, Doubting Thomas (Vagabond Voices). The interactive map has been developed by Vagabond Voices with the generous support of Publishing Scotland’s Go-Digital Fund.
This event is organised by The Open University in Scotland for Book Week Scotland.
Approximate timings:
14:00-14:30 - Introduction by Heather Richardson at the Scottish Storytelling Centre's George Mackay Brown Library. Refreshments (tea, coffee & biscuits) will be served.
14:30-15:30 - Tour of key locations (bring suitable outdoor clothing!)
All attendees will receive complimentary entry to the John Knox House museum next to the Scottish Storytelling Centre. Due to the nature of this event, places are limited. If you find you can no longer attend, please cancel your place to allow reallocation.
The Scottish Storytelling Centre is fully accessible to wheelchair users, except the upper floors of John Knox House. Due to the nature of Edinburgh's Old Town, the tour of key locations may be unsuitable for those with mobility issues.
