This innovation work group is to provide an introduction to Teaching for Mastery for schools who would like to find out more about Teaching for Mastery (TFM)and have little development in this area previously.

Each session of this work group will involve developing an understanding of TFM and will involve visiting a lesson then reflecting on the learning together.

This professional reflection is known as a TRG – a teacher research group – and is a feature from Shanghai school practice.

The aim is to enable participating subject leaders to understand more about Teaching for Mastery and to consider future involvement in the Teaching for Mastery Work Groups in 2019 – 20.

What are the intended Work Group outcomes?

Professional learning

• Understanding of principles of Teaching For Mastery (TFM). This will relate to the Big Ideas of teaching for mastery and will include the use of textbooks with a Teaching for Mastery approach.

Teaching and/or leadership practice

• Participants will begin to incorporate aspects of Teaching For Mastery in their own practice
• Participants will begin to consider how TFM approach could be developed in school

Subject leaders of primary schools who would like to find out more about Teaching For Mastery

Subject leaders of primary schools with previous limited development in Teaching for Mastery

Please note that principles of Teaching for Mastery are transferable across all primary age pupils.

• Session 1 will be on Tuesday 20 November 2018, Time 9 – 11:45 – With Year 1 or 2 pupils
• Session 2 will be on Wednesday 23 Jan 2019, Time TBC – Seeing Shanghai teachers with Year 3 or Year 4 pupils
• Session 3 will be on Thursday 4 April 2019 – Details TBC
