We are delighted to invite you to the inaugural event and first research seminar for the Industrial Foundations of Health Alliance (IFoHA@UCL). IFoHA@UCL is premised on the fact that industrial and economic development concerns of countries must better align with their health goals.
The seminar will be held in STEaPP UCL Boardroom (Shropshire House, 4th Floor, 11-20 Capper Street, London, WC1E 6JA) on 17 September 2025 at 15:00 – 16.30 BST (14:00 – 15:30 GMT, and 19:30 – 21:00 IST). The link for online attendance will be shared via email when you sign up.
IFoHA@UCL is a unique collaboration within the Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy (STEaPP) department at UCL, co-founded by Prof Julius Mugwagwa (Professor of Health Innovation and Public Policy in STEaPP) and Prof Smita Srinivas (STEaPP Honorary Professor). The Industrial Foundations of Health Alliance adds an important new dimension to the traditional public health and bio-medical work that has to date few direct scholarly or policy linkages to the long-standing scholarship on developmental and technological capabilities during industrial transformations in Asia and Africa. IFoHA@UCL showcases work between the research efforts of the Innovation Ecosystems Lab (IEL) at UCL, and the research curated at the Technological Change Lab (TCLab). The Alliance explores through research, education, training, and wider communication, the existing technological capabilities and critical institutional gaps toward improved health outcomes, particularly in low and middle-income countries. Both Profs. Mugwagwa and Srinivas with associated teams have contributed at early stages to this crucial literature and to its policy analysis landscape.
During the seminar, Profs Mugwagwa and Srinivas will present an overview of IFoHA and its purpose, and share their perspectives on the current work on health and industry nexus. We will also be honoured to be joined by Prof Joanna Chataway (Professor of Science and Technology Policy in STEaPP), who will deliver a keynote presentation on the importance of industrial foundations of health for policy and development, and the timeliness of this focus.
Please join us at this launch seminar of the Industrial Foundations of Health Alliance (IFoHA@UCL) in shaping the role of industrial capabilities toward improving health outcomes.
