The School of Modern Languages is delighted to welcome our new Honorary Professor, Professor Stefan Berger.

Biography:

Stefan Berger is Professor of Social History at the Ruhr University Bochum and has held the role of Chair (designate) of the German History Society since 2009. Prof Berger is also the Director of the Institute for Social Movements, Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, and Chairman of the committee of the Library of the Ruhr Foundation. He is a joint general editor of Bloomsbury’s Writing History series on historiography and historical theory, the leading series of its kind in the UK. Early in his career, Prof Berger was Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Modern European History at the then School of European Studies at Cardiff University from 1991 -2000.

Professor Berger has published widely in the fields of modern and contemporary European and global history, nationalism and national identity studies, historiography and historical theory, comparative labour studies, and the history of industrial heritage.
