Inaugural lectures provide an opportunity for academics to share their achievements in research, innovation, engagement and teaching activities before an audience of members of the University community and the general public.

Seeing is Believing – Molecular Machines by High-Resolution Electron Cryo-Microscopy
Ribosomes are macromolecular machines that translate genetic information from messenger RNA into functional proteins. In this lecture I shall discuss how the ribosome, targeting factors and translocation machinery ensure that proteins reach their correct localization in the cell and how this process is coordinated in space and time. We are using electron cryo-microscopy to study the molecular mechanisms of these processes. I will discuss the recent “cryo-EM revolution”which made it possible to achieve near-atomic resolution by this technology.
