Event description

Description

Inaugural lecture to be given by Professor Don Jones, Professor in Translation Biomarkers, The Leicester Cancer Research Centre

Title: The Analytical Translation of Biomarkers from Bench to Bedside.

Biography

Professor Jones is a graduate of Nottingham Trent University where he studied Applied Biology. He then undertook a PhD at the MRC toxicology Unit at Leicester under the supervision of Prof Andy Gescher and Dr Chang Kee Lim studying the anti-cancer properties of quercetin, a polyphenolic found in onions and grapes. Much of this work was done in the laboratory of Prof Peter Farmer and subsequently he was fortunate enough to undertake postdoctoral research in Prof Farmers laboratory researching DNA damage biomarkers and then developing assays for mutagenesis and protein biomarkers using mass spectrometry. In 2004 he became a MRC senior Scientist in Prof Farmers ESS group which was now established within the University of Leicester. In 2008 he was offered a Lectureship in Cancer Studies where, with a successful collaboration with Prof Leong Ng and others, he has helped establish the John and Lucille van Geest Biomarker Facility, one of the largest Cardiovascular biomarker facilities in Europe.

Lecture synopsis

The translation of biomarkers to the clinic is a very exciting area of research. It has the potential to transform clinical science and patient management and will play a critical part in the fields of stratified and precision medicine. However, the field has been beset by failure, as a consequence of several aspects of the biomarker discovery process being badly applied or misunderstood. Professor Jones’ lecture will provide some of the latest research emanating from the John and Lucille van Geest laboratory. This research has transformed every aspect of the discovery process and resulted in a robust platform which is leading to meaningful discovery and validation of biomarkers. He will also discuss how biomarker discovery platforms may well provide the fundamental basis for future patient management.
