About this event
Displacement and radical hope in Myanmar and beyond: objects, museums and peace-building
Tuesday 18 February 2020, George Porter Lecture Theatre B, 5.30pm
Displacement is a global phenomenon: by the end of 2018, 70.8 million of the world’s people were displaced (UNHCR 2019). Cultural artefacts and practices become displaced too – with people, and alone. Focusing on artefacts in and from Myanmar, this talk explores the process, experience and effects of displacement for material things. It points to an ultimately optimistic framework for thing-centred political, social and aesthetic action in the museum and elsewhere.
