Carolyn McGettigan: Making voices heard.
Carolyn McGettigan is Chair in Speech and Hearing Sciences at UCL. Carolyn is fascinated by how humans process information via the sounds of the voice, particularly aspects of personal identity. They're especially interested in familiar voices, including the ways in which human perception is attuned to the sound of people we know well (including ourselves!) and why that might matter. Using methods from psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and phonetics, Carolyn seeks to support and develop the growing international community of interdisciplinary voice scientists.
Clare Press: Active Perception.
Clare Press is Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at UCL. She investigates how we see, feel and hear the world around us, the crucial connections between these perceptions and the actions we perform, and how we learn to coordinate this action-perception interface. She is especially interested in understanding how our brains deal with noise and processing delays and how we overcome challenging biological constraints to select the most useful information for perception. She combines a range of techniques, and integrates knowledge from across cognitive and computational neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy to answer these questions.
