Inaugural Professorial Lecture: Professor Pete Sanderson
Thu 6 April 2017, 18:15 – 19:30 BST
Dealing with Diversity: Journeys through Time and Space
The theme of societies disintegrating under the strain of cultural diversity, manifested in increasingly segregated spatial and social communities, has been used to explain a range of phenomena, from violent extremism to the Brexit vote. This lecture crosses historical and geographical boundaries, and draws on a range of social theory and research career and family history, to explore some implications of the movement of peoples across the globe for cultural diversity, and to consider what might be the conditions for conviviality in these troubled times.
Professor Pete Sanderson is Dean of the School of Education and Professional Development.
Pete is an inter-disciplinary researcher with degrees in History, Social Policy and Psychology. After working as a contract research on Leverhulme and EEC funded projects at the Universities of Sheffield and Bradford, he trained as Further Education Lecturer and joined the staff at Huddersfield as a teacher educator before moving on to teach on Youth and Community courses and lead on Doctor of Education (EdD). Over the course of his career he has been engaged with research on race, ethnicity and community cohesion, but has also worked and published on gender and the legal profession, and professional expertise and access to justice.
