Event description
The Inclusion & Diversity Lab provides valuable space for small groups of arts and cultural organisations to come together.

About this Event

New dates now announced for online delivery. Thank you for your patience during this difficult period.

Since March 2018, Arts Council England regularly funded organisations have been required to implement the Creative Case for Diversity, to put diversity at the heart of decisions taken about artists commissioned and employed and programmes presented. Drawing on our celebrated peer support format, IVE offer Inclusion & Diversity Labs, including an Unconscious Bias workshop.

The Inclusion & Diversity Lab provides valuable space for small groups of arts and cultural organisations to come together, with structured support, to get to grips with their approach to the Creative Case for Diversity, and explore ways that unconscious bias, inclusion and diversity are currently approached in their respective organisations and identify what changes could be made in future. This is space for open and honest conversations, for sharing experiences and for learning and future planning together alongside peers. You will be supported to explore diversity in the work you do that is both relevant to you and sustainable for your organisation.

The Inclusion & Diversity Lab takes place over five separate sessions over three months to help arts organisations focus on understanding, planning, implementing and trialling new ways of working around Inclusion and Diversity.

Course Title: Diversity and Inclusion Labs

Course Description: Five session course to help arts and cultural organisations meet Arts Council England's 'Creative Case for Diversity'

Course Leader: IVE Associate Sophie Hunter

Leaders from arts and cultural organisations (including NPOs).

If you would like to offer the training to a cohort of staff within your organisation, please contact Sarah@weareive.org to discuss our online interactive programme.

What will I learn?

  • How inclusion and diversity are approached within your respective organisations at present – and what changes you might like to make.
  • Chance to explore inclusion and diversity in the work you do in a way that is relevant and sustainable to your organisation.
  • The opportunity to focus deeply on one or two of the Equality Commission’s protected characteristics (age, disability, gender, marital status, pregnancy, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation). The group will learn from each other, from case studies and from examples of best practice over the course of the three sessions.
  • Discover your unconscious biases in a safe space, learning about how you can really make a difference, and your attitudes to differing viewpoints.

Our original Inclusion and Diversity Labs were developed, piloted and funded with Creative Case North funding. These were repeatedly over-subscribed with both excellent feedback and demonstrable impact. On average, other one-day courses of this nature are offered at around £400. We’re able to offer a deeper level of impact and will work you to create real change in your organisation. We’ve deliberately kept our costs down. This is what previous arts and cultural organisation attendees have said about their experience of the IVE Inclusion & Diversity Lab process and experience:

“I’m taking away a real sense of my ability to create change, and feeling empowered to do that. I feel I’ve got everything – a massive toolkit to be able to go in and make some changes, and in a really positive way, as well – this isn’t a compliance issue, this all makes absolute sense: makes me ask why haven’t we been doing this all along? I don’t feel daunted about going back and tackling this. I’m looking forward to educating people who see this as just a box ticking exercise. I expected to go away feeling daunted: now it feels like I’m going to be sharing a passion.”

‘….there’s a strong feeling that we’re not alone doing this; everybody is going through it at the same time. Also that this isn’t a fast, overnight thing: it’s about taking the small steps, it’s going to take a while, and that’s ok. Acknowledging that if we all shout about it enough, and spread it through the company, those small steps will eventually bring change. After the first session I felt daunted, as if it was all down to me. Now I don’t: I get that it is shared responsibility, and that I’m just part of it.”

“I wouldn’t have been able to do that whole organisation discussion about the Creative Case and Diversity on Tuesday if I hadn’t been through this process. I would have been apologetic that I was talking about the Creative Case, not felt empowered to talk about it.”

There are only 8 places available on this course.
