Inclusion and Diversity - The LGBTQ Rainbow at Work
Thu 30 March 2017, 12:00 – 14:00 BST
Ellie Jones from Liberate, Guernsey's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Questioning (LGBTQ) charity will be leading a seminar on inclusion and diversity in the workplace. Liberate was established in Guernsey in 2014 to educate and inform on a wide range of LGBTQ issues and to support those who identify as LGBTQ and their families and friends. They campaign to reform policies and laws for equality, as well as questioning social attitudes and behaviours which discriminate against LGBTQ people, offering advice and help in tackling homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, etc.
Most LGBTQ people live in a world that assumes they don’t exist, where everything is phrased and tailored towards a lifestyle that doesn’t reflect their own.
In this session we will be exploring the importance and practicalities of how to make our workplaces LGBTQ friendly by considering small changes that might make a big difference. We discuss the issues sometimes faced by the LGBTQ community in the workplace, LGBTQ terminology and the difference between gender and sexuality. In addition, Ellie will highlight some of the 'do's and don'ts', provide some simple updates that can be applied to company policies and discuss some common issues that may arise and how to resolve them.
It is widely believed that businesses that show that they actively think about and value the diversity that exists can help foster a more inclusive, accepting and friendly environment. This in turn should make it a more desirable place to work and for customers to engage with.
Registration is at 12.00 for a 12.15 start. A light lunch will be provided.
