The programme
Creativity in the Classroom – Art CPD for Teachers
We are delighted to introduce the third event in our new CPD programme with a fantastic workshop led by local artist and art educator Mark Riley.
The Creativity in the Classroom – Art CPD for Teachers programme is a series of practical CPD workshops for primary teacher. Led by artists, academics and art practitioners, the workshops focus on learning new skills and techniques in the visual arts for you to take back to the classroom.
What will Mark’s workshop involve?
This session will develop your skills and confidence in teaching art techniques that engage and motivate all children and that are proven to be especially impactful for pupils with Special Educational Needs.
The workshop will be led by Mark Riley, an artist and art educator with an expertise and wide experience of working in mainstream primary schools, PRUs and special needs settings.
Mark will share the creative approaches he uses to enthuse pupils to: increase their expressive art making skills and knowledge, to make decisions and think for themselves and to create unique artworks.
Mark will work alongside Arts Connect’s Becky Thompson, a qualified art teacher with 15 years of experience of working in schools.
What will I learn on the day?
What will you do during the day?
- Try out and learn a range of art techniques that Mark has developed with children and teachers using art materials that are inexpensive and accessible.
- Play with large-scale art making techniques that encourage pupils to move and interact with their surroundings and classmates.

- Discuss learning strategies and the sequencing of art activities to heighten pupils’ interest and engagement.
- Increase your knowledge and understanding of contemporary art and artists.

About Mark
Mark is a Community Artist, and since graduating with a BA (Hons) in Visual Arts & Art History in 1993 has worked in a variety of settings with diverse participants and partners, including schools, children’s centres, schools, and within the community.
He delivers training for public and voluntary sector organisations and holds C&G 7307 Stage 1, and Arts Award Assessor (Discovery & Explore), and Level 3 Forest School Leader.
His work revolves around helping people think, make sense of where they are and provide an opportunity to express this. This has increasingly involved exploring creativity and thinking through making. In the educational context this has investigated teaching for thinking, using child led open ended activities to encourage creative and critical thinking, and visualising ideas.
